Single Parent Parenting Tips

Being a single parent is not an easy task. At National Family Solutions, we are here to help with any of your family law issues. We know that when it comes to our children, we will do whatever it takes to keep them safe and happy. Below are a few parenting tips for those single parents out there.

Raising kids by yourself means you don’t have anyone there to back you up if they won’t play nicely. Keep them co-operating by making expectations clear when it comes to behavior  The first thing Supernanny often does on the show is establish a clear set of House Rules, so that the family can agree consequences for not sticking to these rules. Jennifer Wolf, a Parent Coaching Institute certified parent coach, suggests the following for single parents:

  • Establish ground rules: Communicate a set of three to five rules before children misbehave.
  • Use praise: Misbehavior is often a search for approval in disguise. Find opportunities every day to praise good behavior  Reward Charts are simple and effective ways to encourage good behavior  Develop a firm and serious tone of voice. Lowering your voice can be a good tool for effective parent-child communication.
  • Set boundaries: Children need to understand when their behavior is crossing a line. The House Rules will help them remember what behavior has been agreed as unacceptable. Redirect/separate: A child who displays persistent bad behavior can be redirected. If the problem is fighting over toys, take them away; if it is about television, turn it off. Ignore it: When misbehavior is tied to a desire to draw attention, do not allow it to succeed. Time out: Choose a place, such as a chair or corner, where children are challenged to think about bad behavior.

Information On Alimony

Alimony is a legal financial agreement between separated or divorced couples. One partner provides regular payments to the other and is only available to couples who have been legally married. Throughout the United States, each state law on alimony differs. However, there are three common types of alimony. Lump sum alimony is an arrangement where the courts allow payment to be calculated and paid at once. This may sound like a good idea to both parties but because of the taxes this arrangement is not always favorable. Temporary alimony is also known as rehabilitative alimony and is an arrangement when one party is responsible for gaining financial independence and only requires support for a period of time. In some cases, the money is used to for further education or skill training. Permanent alimony is when payments are made regularly for an indefinite period without a fixed end date.Unmarried couple have palimony for relief. Traditionally, married couples consist of a working partner and a domestic partner. The working partner provides financially for the couple, while the domestic partner contributed in other ways, most notably by physically and emotionally supporting the working partner, keeping the home up, and in many cases, caring for children. When a marriage dissolved, the domestic partner was awarded alimony as a means to honor the promise of lifelong financial support in recognition of contributions made to the relationship. Some argue that alimony is too easily abused these days. The type of alimony awarded is based on circumstances and considerations. A good example can be how long the marriage lasted, ability to provide for oneself, and sacrifices made for the marriage. Alimony is a complicated area of family law. It is best to speak with an experienced legal counsel if you have questions regarding alimony.

Facts About Child Custody

When a marriage ends and children are involved, it can be a difficult time for all members involved. A child custody order will be determined based on the type of custody each parent will receive. Custody type outlines the legal rights each parent has while the child is in their care. There are several different types of custody. Joint custody refers to both parents having legal and or physical custody of their children. The amount of time the children share with each parent is about equal. Each parent also has the right to make legal decisions regarding the upbringing of their child, such as which school they will attend and under what religion they will be raised. Sole custody, on the other hand, provides physical and decision-making authority to one parent, often with the other parent having visitation during school breaks and weekends.
